Americans Try to Avoid Credit Fraud By Not Signing Their Cards

44% of Americans are leaving their bank cards unsigned as an extra security measure against fraud. The theory is that having an unsigned card will lead to a customer being asked for ID before a sale is made, explained Info Security magazine.

Identity theft and the misuse of credit and debit cards is a big problem in America, with a survey revealing 26% of people have been the victim of card fraud. The ‘leave-it-blank’ option is a call by consumers for retailers to take a greater responsibility in preventing crime.

There is currently a lack of caution when accepting sales and 29% of all Americans claim to have made a purchase using someone else’s card. Women are more likely to have made a purchase with someone else’s card, but men are more likely to be a target of fraud.

Leaving your card unsigned is not a recommended move as a person committing fraud could simply sign it before they use it.
